Why Chest Tube Drainage Is Needed
Chest tube drainage is needed when air, blood, or fluid accumulates in the pleural space around the lungs, commonly due to a collapsed lung (pneumothorax), traumatic chest injury, infection causing fluid buildup (pleural effusion or empyema), or after chest and heart surgery. It relieves pressure on the lung and allows it to re-expand properly.
