Mastoidectomy is performed specifically to remove infected air cells within the mastoid bone caused by chronic mastoiditis, often stemming from repeated or poorly treated middle ear infections, or to clear a cholesteatoma that has invaded this bone. It becomes necessary when infection persists despite antibiotics or risks spreading to nearby structures like the inner ear or brain.

Signs You May Need Mastoidectomy

Patients typically present with ongoing ear discharge that may be foul-smelling, throbbing ear or behind-the-ear pain, swelling and redness behind the ear, fever, and hearing loss. Advanced or untreated cases can cause dizziness, facial nerve weakness, or severe headache, signaling the infection has progressed and needs urgent surgical treatment.

Types of Mastoidectomy

Simple (cortical) mastoidectomy removes only the infected mastoid air cells while keeping the middle ear structures intact, typically used for uncomplicated mastoiditis. Radical and modified radical mastoidectomy remove more extensive diseased tissue, including parts of the middle ear, for advanced cholesteatoma or chronic disease, sometimes combined with procedures to reconstruct hearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How urgent is mastoidectomy once mastoiditis is diagnosed?

Acute mastoiditis with signs of spreading infection is treated urgently, sometimes within days, since delay raises the risk of serious complications like brain abscess or meningitis, so prompt ENT evaluation is important.

Will I lose hearing after mastoidectomy?

The surgery aims to preserve or improve hearing where possible, though the extent of pre-existing damage from infection determines the final hearing outcome, which your surgeon will discuss based on pre-op tests.

How long does it take to recover from mastoidectomy?

Most patients recover over four to six weeks, with the ear needing to stay dry and protected during this healing period, and follow-up visits to monitor healing and hearing.

Can mastoiditis come back after surgery?

Recurrence is uncommon after complete surgical clearance, but ongoing ear hygiene and prompt treatment of any new infections helps prevent problems from developing again.

What are the risks of mastoidectomy?

Risks include hearing changes, dizziness, taste disturbance, or rarely facial nerve injury due to its close proximity to the surgical area, all of which an experienced ENT surgeon works carefully to avoid.
