D&C is performed to remove abnormal tissue from inside the uterus, most often to manage heavy or prolonged abnormal uterine bleeding, to complete an incomplete miscarriage, or to remove retained products of conception. It is also used diagnostically to obtain an endometrial tissue sample when cancer or precancerous changes of the uterine lining are suspected.
