Why Balloon Atrial Septostomy Is Needed

Performed in newborns with certain critical congenital heart defects, most notably transposition of the great arteries, where oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood don't mix adequately between heart chambers, causing severe oxygen deprivation. It creates or enlarges an opening between the heart's upper chambers to improve the baby's oxygen levels as an emergency or bridging measure.
