Persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, and abdominal pain are common warning signs that lead to a diagnosis requiring colectomy. Recurrent episodes of severe abdominal pain and fever from diverticulitis, or worsening symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease despite medication, also indicate that surgery may be necessary.
