What is Bladder Cancer?
Bladder cancer is a malignancy that begins in the cells lining the bladder, most commonly the urothelial cells that line the inside of the urinary tract. It typically presents with blood in the urine, which may be visible or detected only on laboratory testing, and can range from superficial tumours confined to the bladder lining to more aggressive cancers that invade the muscle wall and spread to other organs. It is more common in older adults and has a strong association with tobacco use, which is the single largest risk factor. Early detection through prompt evaluation of blood in the urine significantly improves treatment outcomes.

No
Causes of Bladder Cancer
Strongly associated with smoking, which is responsible for a substantial proportion of cases due to carcinogens absorbed into the bloodstream and excreted through the bladder. Other risk factors include occupational exposure to certain industrial chemicals, chronic bladder irritation or infection, prior radiation therapy to the pelvis, and a family history of bladder cancer. Age and male sex also increase risk, with the disease being more common after 55.
Symptoms of Bladder Cancer
Blood in the urine, often painless, frequent urination, pain or burning during urination, urgency to urinate, pelvic pain, lower back pain if the cancer has spread, unexplained weight loss in advanced disease
Treatment & Types of Bladder Cancer in Telangana
Treatment depends on the stage and grade of the tumour, ranging from transurethral resection of superficial tumours followed by intravesical therapy with immunotherapy or chemotherapy instilled directly into the bladder, to more extensive surgery such as partial or complete bladder removal for muscle-invasive disease. Systemic chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy are used for advanced or metastatic cases. Regular surveillance cystoscopy is essential given the tendency for recurrence.
Bladder cancer is classified by how deeply it invades the bladder wall: non-muscle-invasive (superficial) bladder cancer, confined to the inner lining and generally treated with local procedures, versus muscle-invasive bladder cancer, which has grown into the deeper muscle layer and typically requires more extensive surgery or systemic treatment. It is also graded by how abnormal the cancer cells appear under the microscope, which predicts how likely the tumour is to grow and spread.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is blood in the urine always a sign of bladder cancer?
No, it has many possible causes including infection or kidney stones, but painless blood in the urine should always be promptly evaluated to rule out bladder cancer.
Does smoking really increase the risk this much?
Yes, smoking is the single largest risk factor for bladder cancer, responsible for a substantial share of all cases.
Will I need my bladder removed?
Only more advanced, muscle-invasive cancers typically require partial or complete bladder removal; superficial tumours are often treated with less invasive procedures.
Why do I need repeated cystoscopies after treatment?
Bladder cancer has a notable tendency to recur, so regular surveillance cystoscopy is essential to catch any recurrence early.
Can bladder cancer be cured?
Early-stage, superficial bladder cancer has a good prognosis with appropriate treatment and surveillance, while more advanced disease is managed with a combination of therapies aimed at controlling the cancer.
