Treatment & Types of Dysphagia in Maharashtra
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity, and often includes dietary modifications such as altering food texture or liquid thickness to make swallowing safer, along with specific swallowing exercises taught by a speech-language pathologist to strengthen and better coordinate the muscles involved. Postural techniques and specific swallowing maneuvers can help reduce the risk of aspiration during meals. For severe or structural cases, medical or surgical treatment of the underlying cause, such as dilation of an esophageal stricture or, in extreme cases, temporary feeding tube placement, may be necessary to maintain adequate nutrition and hydration safely.
Dysphagia is classified by the stage of swallowing affected: oropharyngeal dysphagia, involving difficulty initiating a swallow or moving food from the mouth to the throat, often from neurological causes, and esophageal dysphagia, involving a sensation of food sticking after swallowing, often from structural narrowing or motility problems in the esophagus. It is further described as mechanical, from a physical obstruction, or functional, from impaired muscle or nerve coordination.
