A state where cells respond poorly to insulin, so the pancreas secretes more to maintain normal glucose. It underlies type 2 diabetes, PCOS, and fatty liver, and is driven largely by visceral fat and inactivity.
It typically precedes diabetes by years, and often shows up first as raised triglycerides, low HDL, fatty liver, raised waist circumference or PCOS.
It responds well to the same measures: weight loss, resistance training, reduced refined carbohydrate, better sleep, and treating sleep apnoea if present.
