What is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, does not produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body's needs, causing many of the body's metabolic processes to slow down. Thyroid hormone regulates metabolism throughout nearly every organ system, so its deficiency produces a wide range of symptoms affecting energy levels, weight, temperature regulation, mood, and more. In India and globally, the most common cause is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto's thyroiditis, in which the immune system gradually damages the thyroid gland, alongside iodine deficiency, which remains relevant in certain regions despite widespread salt iodisation programmes. Hypothyroidism often develops slowly, and its symptoms can be subtle and easily attributed to other causes, meaning the condition frequently goes undiagnosed for some time. Diagnosis through a simple blood test and daily thyroid hormone replacement therapy generally provide excellent, long-lasting symptom control.

Causes of Hypothyroidism
Most commonly caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system gradually attacks and damages the thyroid gland, reducing its ability to produce hormone. Other causes include iodine deficiency, prior thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment, certain medications, and, less commonly, disorders affecting the pituitary gland that regulates thyroid function. Women, particularly those over 60, and individuals with a family history of thyroid or other autoimmune conditions are at higher risk.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
Fatigue and low energy, unexplained weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin and hair, constipation, muscle weakness or aches, depression or low mood, irregular menstrual periods, slowed heart rate
Treatment & Types of Hypothyroidism in Telangana
Treatment involves daily oral thyroid hormone replacement medication, typically levothyroxine, which restores normal hormone levels and resolves symptoms in the majority of patients when dosed appropriately. Regular blood testing is used to monitor thyroid hormone levels and adjust the medication dose as needed, particularly during pregnancy or with significant weight changes. Treatment is generally lifelong, though the dose may need periodic adjustment based on changing needs over time.
Hypothyroidism is classified as primary, resulting from a problem within the thyroid gland itself, most commonly Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition, and secondary (or central), resulting from insufficient signalling from the pituitary gland even though the thyroid itself is normal. Severity ranges from subclinical hypothyroidism, mildly abnormal hormone levels with few or no symptoms, to overt hypothyroidism, with clearly elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone and low thyroid hormone causing typical symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is hypothyroidism hereditary?
Having a family history of thyroid disease or other autoimmune conditions increases your risk, since Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most common cause, has a genetic component alongside environmental triggers.
Do I need to take thyroid medication forever?
In most cases yes, since the underlying thyroid damage doesn't reverse, but the dose may be adjusted over time based on regular blood tests, particularly during pregnancy or significant weight changes.
What happens if hypothyroidism is left untreated?
Untreated hypothyroidism can cause worsening fatigue, weight gain, high cholesterol, and, in severe long-standing cases, heart and cognitive complications, so timely diagnosis and treatment are important even when symptoms seem mild.
Can diet affect hypothyroidism?
Adequate iodine intake, usually met through iodised salt, supports normal thyroid function, but once autoimmune damage has occurred, diet alone cannot substitute for thyroid hormone replacement medication.
How is hypothyroidism diagnosed?
It's diagnosed with a simple blood test measuring thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroid hormone levels, which your doctor may order if you have suggestive symptoms or risk factors like a family history of thyroid disease.
