Causes of Prediabetes

Caused primarily by insulin resistance, in which the body's cells respond less effectively to insulin, requiring the pancreas to produce more to maintain normal blood sugar levels until it can no longer keep pace. Risk factors include excess body weight particularly around the abdomen, physical inactivity, family history of diabetes, and a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar. Age over 45, polycystic ovary syndrome, and a history of gestational diabetes further increase risk.
