Why Dilation and Curettage (D&C) Is Needed
D&C is performed to diagnose or treat heavy or irregular uterine bleeding, to remove retained tissue after an incomplete miscarriage or abortion, or to obtain an endometrial tissue sample when cancer or hyperplasia is suspected. It may also be done to remove polyps or fibroid tissue projecting into the uterine cavity.
Signs You May Need Dilation and Curettage (D&C)
Patients considered for D&C often report prolonged or unusually heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods or after menopause, or ongoing bleeding and cramping following a confirmed miscarriage. Persistent pelvic pain with abnormal bleeding that has not resolved with medication is another common indication.
Types of Dilation and Curettage (D&C)
The procedure can be done using sharp curettage, where a spoon-shaped instrument scrapes the uterine lining, or suction (vacuum) curettage, which uses gentle suction and is more commonly used today for its lower complication rate. It may also be combined with hysteroscopy, allowing the surgeon to directly visualise the uterine cavity while removing tissue.
