Why Gum Graft Surgery Is Needed
Gum graft surgery is performed to treat gum recession caused by aggressive brushing, periodontal disease, thin gum tissue, or teeth grinding, where the tooth root becomes exposed and vulnerable. It is also done preventively when recession is progressing and at risk of causing further bone loss or tooth sensitivity if left untreated.

Common signs include visible lengthening of teeth as gums pull back, heightened sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods at the gumline, a notch or groove felt at the base of a tooth, and teeth that appear yellowish where the root surface is exposed. Types of Gum Graft Surgery
A connective tissue graft, the most common type, uses tissue taken from beneath a flap in the roof of the mouth to cover the exposed root, while a free gingival graft uses a thin layer of tissue directly from the palate, often chosen for patients with naturally thin gums. A pedicle graft uses gum tissue from next to the affected tooth rather than the palate, and grafts can also use processed donor or synthetic tissue when patients prefer to avoid a second surgical site.
