Why Colposcopy and Biopsy Is Needed
Colposcopy is performed following an abnormal Pap smear or a positive HPV test to get a closer, magnified look at the cervix and identify precancerous or cancerous changes. It's also used to investigate unexplained abnormal vaginal bleeding or a cervix that appears abnormal on routine pelvic examination.
Signs You May Need Colposcopy and Biopsy
Most patients undergoing colposcopy have no symptoms themselves and are referred because of an abnormal screening test result. However, unexplained bleeding after intercourse, between periods, or after menopause can also prompt a doctor to recommend colposcopy to rule out cervical abnormalities.
Types of Colposcopy and Biopsy
Standard colposcopy uses acetic acid and sometimes iodine solution applied to the cervix to highlight abnormal areas for targeted biopsy. When abnormal cells are found deeper in the cervical canal or a larger area needs to be sampled, an excisional procedure like a LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision) may follow as both a diagnostic and treatment step.
