Causes of Stroke

Ischemic stroke most commonly results from a blood clot that forms within a narrowed artery due to atherosclerosis, or a clot that travels from elsewhere in the body, such as the heart in people with atrial fibrillation, and lodges in a brain artery. Hemorrhagic stroke results from the rupture of a weakened blood vessel, often due to chronic high blood pressure or an aneurysm, causing bleeding directly into brain tissue. Major risk factors for stroke overall include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, atrial fibrillation, and a sedentary lifestyle.
