What is Adenoid Hypertrophy?

Adenoid hypertrophy is the enlargement of the adenoids, a mass of lymphatic tissue located at the back of the nasal cavity above the tonsils that helps trap and fight inhaled germs. Adenoids are naturally larger in young children and typically shrink with age, but repeated infections or chronic inflammation can cause them to become persistently enlarged, obstructing the nasal airway and the openings of the Eustachian tubes. This obstruction can lead to chronic mouth breathing, snoring, and recurrent ear infections due to poor Eustachian tube drainage. It is one of the most common reasons for ENT referral in young children.

Common — a frequent finding in young children, particularly those aged 3 to 7

Causes of Adenoid Hypertrophy

Adenoid hypertrophy most commonly results from repeated exposure to viral or bacterial infections that cause the adenoid tissue to enlarge as part of the immune response, with incomplete shrinkage between infections leading to progressive enlargement. Allergic rhinitis and chronic inflammation from environmental irritants such as secondhand smoke can also contribute to persistent enlargement. It is most prevalent in children between the ages of three and seven, when the adenoids are naturally at their largest relative size.

Symptoms of Adenoid Hypertrophy

chronic nasal congestion and mouth breathing, loud snoring or noisy breathing during sleep, recurrent ear infections, hearing difficulty from fluid buildup behind the eardrum, nasal-sounding voice, sleep disturbance including pauses in breathing, chronic runny nose, poor appetite

Treatment & Types of Adenoid Hypertrophy in Chandigarh

Mild cases are managed with intranasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation and saline nasal irrigation, along with treatment of any underlying allergies. When adenoid enlargement causes significant airway obstruction, recurrent ear infections, or sleep-disordered breathing, surgical removal of the adenoids, called adenoidectomy, is performed and is highly effective at resolving symptoms. This procedure is frequently combined with tonsillectomy or placement of ear ventilation tubes when those conditions coexist.

Adenoid hypertrophy is graded by how much of the nasal airway is obstructed on examination or imaging, typically on a scale from grade I (mild, minimal blockage) to grade IV (near-complete obstruction of the nasal passage), which helps guide whether medical management or adenoidectomy is the better option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child outgrow enlarged adenoids?

Adenoid tissue naturally shrinks after around age seven, so many mild cases improve on their own with time.

Is adenoid removal surgery safe for young children?

Yes, adenoidectomy is a common, generally safe day procedure with a high success rate for relieving obstruction and recurrent ear infections.

Can enlarged adenoids cause hearing problems?

Yes, by blocking drainage of the Eustachian tubes they can lead to fluid buildup behind the eardrum and temporary hearing difficulty.

Do allergies make adenoid enlargement worse?

Yes, allergic inflammation of the nasal lining can contribute to persistent adenoid swelling, so treating allergies is often part of management.

Is every snoring child a candidate for surgery?

Not necessarily — an ENT specialist should evaluate persistent snoring or noisy breathing to confirm adenoids are the cause before recommending surgery.
