Frenulectomy is performed when a tight or short frenulum (the small band of tissue under the tongue or connecting the lip to the gum) restricts normal movement, most often diagnosed as tongue-tie or lip-tie in infants affecting breastfeeding, or in older children and adults causing speech difficulties. It's also considered when a tight lingual frenulum contributes to dental issues like a gap between the front teeth or difficulty with oral hygiene.

Signs You May Need Frenulectomy

In infants, signs include difficulty latching during breastfeeding, poor weight gain, clicking sounds while feeding, and maternal nipple pain. In older children or adults, warning signs include difficulty pronouncing certain sounds clearly, limited tongue movement (unable to touch the roof of the mouth or stick the tongue out past the lips), and, for lip-tie, a persistent gap between the front teeth or gum recession.

Types of Frenulectomy

A simple frenotomy (snip) using scissors or a scalpel is used for thin, simple tongue-ties, often in very young infants with minimal or no anesthesia needed. Frenuloplasty, a slightly more involved technique using sutures to reposition the tissue, is used for thicker frenulums or in older children/adults, and laser frenectomy is a newer option offering precise cutting with less bleeding and faster healing.
