Why Lung Transplant Is Needed

Lung transplant is considered for end-stage lung disease that no longer responds to medical treatment, most commonly severe COPD/emphysema, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, or pulmonary hypertension. It becomes necessary once the lungs can no longer provide adequate oxygen exchange to sustain daily activities despite maximum medical therapy.
