Types of Fistula Surgery

Fistulotomy, the most common technique for simple fistulas, opens up the entire tract to let it heal from the inside out. For more complex fistulas involving significant sphincter muscle, surgeons may use a seton (a thread left in place to slowly cut through tissue or drain the tract) or newer sphincter-sparing techniques like LIFT (ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract) or fibrin glue to preserve continence.
