Why Liver Cancer Surgery Is Needed

This surgery is performed for primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) or select cases of cancer that has spread to the liver from elsewhere, typically arising in the setting of chronic hepatitis B or C infection, long-standing cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, or heavy alcohol use that damages liver tissue over time. It is recommended when the tumor is localized enough that removing it, alone or alongside ablative treatments, can achieve control of the cancer.
