What is Echocardiography?
A non-invasive ultrasound imaging test that evaluates the structure and function of the heart including valves, chambers, and pumping efficiency. Used to diagnose heart disease, monitor treatment, and assess heart function.

Why Echocardiography Is Needed
Echocardiography is ordered when a doctor suspects structural heart disease such as valve dysfunction, cardiomyopathy, or congenital defects, or needs to assess how well the heart is pumping in a patient with heart failure symptoms. It is also used routinely to monitor patients on cardiotoxic chemotherapy or those recovering from a heart attack.
Signs You May Need Echocardiography
Warning signs include breathlessness with minimal exertion, swelling of the ankles or abdomen, fatigue disproportionate to activity, palpitations, chest discomfort, or fainting episodes. A heart murmur or abnormal findings on a physical exam or ECG often lead directly to this test even before overt symptoms develop.
Types of Echocardiography
Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the routine, non-invasive approach performed through the chest wall, while transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) offers a closer view via a probe passed into the oesophagus for more detailed valve and clot assessment. Doppler and 3D echocardiography add further detail on blood flow direction, velocity, and chamber geometry, and stress echocardiography evaluates heart function under exertion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is echocardiography the same as an ECG?
No, an ECG records the heart's electrical activity while echocardiography uses ultrasound to create a moving picture of the heart's structure and blood flow; the two tests are complementary rather than interchangeable.
What is the cost of this test in India?
A standard echocardiography typically costs Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000, though advanced 3D or stress echocardiograms can cost more depending on the centre.
Is any preparation needed before the scan?
Generally no special preparation is required, and you can continue your normal diet and medications unless your cardiologist advises otherwise for a stress echocardiogram.
How soon will I know the results?
The cardiologist typically reviews the images immediately and can share preliminary findings the same day, with a formal report following within 24 hours.
Can echocardiography detect a heart attack in progress?
It can show areas of the heart muscle not moving normally, which supports a heart attack diagnosis, but it is usually used alongside ECG and blood tests rather than alone for acute diagnosis.
