Broadly: LDL under 100 mg/dL for average risk (under 70 with existing heart disease or diabetes), HDL above 40 in men and 50 in women, triglycerides under 150, total under 200. Targets are individualised by overall risk.
With diabetes, LDL targets are usually tighter — commonly below 70 mg/dL, and below 55 mg/dL if there is established cardiovascular disease.
Triglycerides above 150 with low HDL is a common pattern in insulin resistance and improves considerably with weight loss and glucose control.
