Most people eating a varied diet don't. Multivitamins haven't shown clear benefit for preventing heart disease or cancer in healthy adults. Targeted supplementation is different — B12 for vegans, folic acid in pregnancy, vitamin D if deficient, iron if anaemic.
Large trials in well-nourished adults have not shown reduced heart disease, cancer or mortality from routine multivitamins.
Excess is possible with fat-soluble vitamins. High-dose vitamin A, D and E taken long-term can cause harm, so more is not safer.
